Everyone loves to shop online these days. Whenever I have nothing to do, I usually get on Amazon and see what items I want to buy next. What is the future of online shopping? What if you could buy products on live streams and have a conversation with the seller? Luckily for you, that time has come on social media. I believe that it will become the new normal to shop online on social media in the coming years.

    What is live shopping?

Live shopping is where live streaming and e-commerce meet social media. It allows merchants and companies to sell products in real-time. Merchants can sell products through natural conversation instead of a boring description. Instead of it being recorded like on TV, live shopping is live, and the seller can have conversations with the consumers. It also allows the consumers to have a connection and trust the seller because of the discussions and the at-home feeling. Live shopping can be a celebrity selling one of their favorite products to a fashion show.

How popular is live shopping already?

Live shopping is already trending in China. It is predicted that more than 320 million people will buy a product from live shopping this year alone. By 2025, due to live shopping, consumer spending on social media apps is guessed to hit $17.2 billion.

What social media is using live shopping?

In November 2021, Youtube announced their "Holiday Live Stream and Shop." This event was a week long and hosted by content creators. This was a partnership with Walmart, Samsung, and Verizon. Instagram had already done its live shopping event in September 2021 with "10 Days of Live Shopping." Celebrities like Selena Gomez sold products or brands on their live stream. Facebook announced that every Friday would be live shopping day on the social media platform. Meanwhile, in late 2020, TikTok had already organized a live shopping event day in association with Walmart, kickstarting platforms’ interest in e-commerce. There are also apps that are for live shopping specifically.

Who can host a live shopping live stream?

Anyone that represents the brand or product is allowed to live stream and sell the product. Celebrities can live stream and sell their products, or if they have a partnership with a brand, they can sell those products as well. Influencer marketing has become extremely popular over the years due to the rise of social media and influencers. Celebrities can live stream directly to their followers, and all the consumers have to do is press the link to the product and buy it.

How is live shopping the future?

Live shopping is a one-of-a-kind tool that can imitate social and participatory aspects of in-person shopping. Large retailers, such as Walmart, are pilot testing shoppable videos to engage their customers in this first-of-its-kind experience.
Live shopping is a means for you to reinforce a memorable online shopping experience and exhibit the greatest elements of your products online, whether you have an existing brick-and-mortar footprint or an e-commerce native. While live shopping has been around for a while and is still prevalent in areas of Asia and Europe, North America is falling behind closely. According to numbers, live shopping is a disruptor in the retail internet market that is here to stay.
